Mattress Protector Consumer Guide

By Zach Smith

A mattress protector is exactly what it seems like. It works to protect the mattress from accumulating dust mites and other allergens to protect the user’s health. Protectors are usually made of hypoallergenic material such as vinyl and come in different types. There are even covers that come in different covers and designs that will suit various interior design themes.

Shopping for mattress covers is an important aspect of maintaining your mattress as well as of making sure that you get a restful sleep – one that is uninterrupted by allergic reactions to dust mites and other particles that may have accumulated on your bed.

Encasements

A mattress protector typically comes in two forms: the zippered-kind and the fitted-form. The former literally encloses the whole mattress in some sort of protective casing that covers the top, bottom and four sides of the bed. This type is more effective in keeping allergens out. The only downside is that it can be a difficult to get your mattress in and out of the zippered protector.

A fitted cover, on the other hand, is designed to protect the top and four sides of the mattress. It is easier to install and remove from the mattress but as far as protection, it is not as effective as the zippered encasement.

Material

A mattress protector may also be made of different types of material. Vinyl is more popular among consumers. It can protect the mattress from dust, fluids and odors while keeping the user from ingesting allergens that can affect his health. Vinyl covers are typically pre-treated to help inhibit the growth of mildew in the mattress. Maintenance of vinyl covers is also easier as all it takes is a damp cloth for them to get cleaned. The only problem is that vinyl may not provide as much comfort because it doesn’t have a breathable surface. For this, most users choose to add an absorbent layer.

Allersoft covers are one of the newest innovations in mattress protectors. They usually come with a pore size of four microns making it more difficult for allergens to get through the surface. They don’t have to use polyurethane membranes for protection so they are breathable and comfortable for the user. The only downside is that allersoft covers are not waterproof.

Premium encasements are generally the most expensive of the lot but they provide optimum allergen protection while maintaining comfort for the user. They are typically lightweight, waterproof and breathable. For the most part, premium encasements are designed to bring together the best of the allersoft and vinyl mattress protector. These covers are normally used in high-end hotels and other multi-user living facilities.

Heads up

There are many things that should be considered when purchasing the right mattress protector. Your budget, specific sleeping concerns and your location will greatly influence your choice. If you live in an area that is normally dusty, you will probably need heavy duty covers to prolong the life of your mattress and, of course, provide you with optimum protection.
