A Double Bed For An Only Child
By Jessica Ackerman
Designing a bedroom for an only child can be a lot of fun. Depending on the child’s age, he or she can also help with the planning and decorating decisions. One of the most important aspects of the design is in the choice of the bed. There are so many different options that it can be difficult to narrow them down to only one. If you are thinking about adding a new bed to your child’s room, no matter what your child’s age, consider making it a double bed.
Why a Double
There are many reasons for investing in a bed that goes beyond the traditional twin size. As your child grows older, he will need more room. In fact, by the time your son is in his teens, his feet may be hanging well off the end of any twin mattress. A double bed not only provides additional width, but it also provides added length. That length will come in handy as your child grows and will keep you from having to invest in another bed frame and mattress.
Play It Up
If your child is still young, a double bed may seem far too big. However, there are some great ways that you can make that big bed feel more cozy and pint sized. Try adding a bed tent to the mattress to create a unique quiet area. The bed will feel more enclosed which will make your younger child feel more snug and secure. It may be difficult finding a double-bed bed tent in stores, so check online with specialty retailers who make and distribute custom children’s bedding.
Storage
Another bonus to having a double bed in your child’s room is the additional storage space available under the bed. A twin bed can only provide so much room, but a double bed has just enough extra space that your child can keep shoes, toys and out of season clothing stored neatly underneath. Under the bed storage containers that are durable and washable are ideal, as children tend to be harder on storage containers than adults.
Off to College
Once your child has moved off to college, a double bed will be perfect for the guest room. It is just wide enough and long enough to accommodate an adult guest without taking up too much room. Your adult child will also enjoy having room to stretch out when he returns from college on breaks and summer vacation. One drawback to putting a double bed into a teen’s room, however, is that when he does go off to college and is living in the dorm, he will have to get used to sleeping on a much smaller twin bed.
A double bed for your only child is a great versatile bedroom furniture option. It is a piece that will grow with him and that will keep guests comfortable long after he has left the home. Invest in a double bed now to avoid having to purchase yet another bed as your child grows up.
